My Guide to Corking Hookbaits

Corking hookbaits increases their buoyancy, enhancing their effectiveness. Here’s a guide using Fox International’s range of products.

Tools Needed:

Detailed Steps:

  1. Select Your Hookbait:
  • Choose a buoyant hookbait like CC Moore Pop-Ups. Ensure it’s suitable for the target fish species.
  1. Drill Centrally:
  • Use the Fox Edges™ Bait Drill (6mm) to drill into the centre of the bait. Ensure the drill remains steady to avoid splitting the bait. Aim for the middle for even buoyancy.
  1. Core Out the Bait:
  • Continue drilling to the desired depth, typically about two-thirds of the bait’s depth. This creates a cavity for the cork stick.
  1. Insert Cork Stick:
  • Cut a piece of Fox Edges™ Cork Stick to match the depth of the hole. Gently push the cork into the cavity. The snug fit is essential for maintaining the bait’s shape and buoyancy.
  1. Trim Excess:
  • Using Fox Edges™ Razor Scissors, trim any excess cork flush with the surface of the bait. This ensures a smooth, even surface, crucial for presentation.
  1. Prepare for Rigging:
  • Mount the corked bait onto a bait needle, inserting the needle from the base of the bait and exiting through the top, with the cork side going on last.
  1. Attach to Rig:
  • Thread a piece of Fox Edges™ Bait Floss through the bait needle. Pull the floss through the bait and secure it to the rig, ensuring the bait is positioned correctly and securely.
  1. Secure with Lighter:
  • Trim the excess floss and carefully use a lighter to blob the end, securing the bait in place. This prevents the bait from slipping during casting and ensures it remains attractive to fish.

Benefits of Corking Hookbaits:

  • Enhanced Buoyancy: Corking ensures the bait remains buoyant for extended periods, making it more enticing to fish.
  • Better Presentation: The bait sits naturally in the water, mimicking live prey and increasing the chances of a bite.
  • Increased Durability: Corked baits are more durable, standing up to repeated casts and nibbles from fish.

By following these steps and using Fox International products, you can enhance the performance of your hookbaits, leading to more successful fishing trips.
